Did you know that every science degree at QUT includes Work Integrated Learning?

Work Integrated Learning (WIL) is real, hands‑on experience that connect your study to the work scientists do every day. Instead of waiting until your final year to 'try out' the industry, QUT students build these experiences into their learning from the very beginning.

Across our science majors, students have taken part in experiences such as:

  • Environmental monitoring placements with government agencies
  • Laboratory internships in chemistry, biology, and physics
  • Community impact emergency response simulations
  • Great Barrier Reef restoration projects supporting coral recovery
  • Outback fossil digs alongside palaeontologists

These experiences help you build confidence, develop professional skills, and contribute to real scientific work long before you graduate.

Applying science in high-pressure situations

For Bachelor of Science (Climate Science) student Lauren Hirst, WIL meant stepping into the role of an emergency management professional through a disaster simulation exercise at the State Disaster Coordination Centre (SDCC).

As part of her Natural Hazards class, Lauren worked alongside representatives from organisations including the Queensland Police Service, Queensland Fire Department, National Emergency Management Agency and the Bureau of Meteorology.

Lauren Hirst - disaster response Lauren Hirst (pictured right) at the State Disaster Coordnation Centre.

The simulation challenged students to respond to changing hazard information, consider community impacts and apply their scientific knowledge to a realistic emergency scenario.

The experience gave Lauren a behind-the-scenes understanding of how different agencies work together during major events and showed how science can support real-world decision-making. Watch Lauren's reel about her WIL experience.

Building industry skills through research experience

Grace SuterFor Bachelor of Science (Biological Sciences) student Grace Suter, WIL provided the opportunity to contribute to a real research project with industry partner AgBiTech.

During her semester-long industry and research project, Grace investigated how a naturally occurring insect virus affected the reproduction of Helicoverpa armigera, an agricultural pest that can impact crops.  Working in a laboratory environment, she was involved in experimental design, insect colony management and laboratory techniques, while also developing her ability to communicate scientific findings.

For Grace, the experience helped bridge the gap between university study and a career in scientific research.

“Working full-time in a lab environment and contributing to experimental design gave me a clear insight into research processes and helped solidify my career direction,” Grace said.

The experience strengthened her technical and professional skills, while also helping her understand the range of opportunities available through a science career.

Using real data to solve real problems

Becky Poynton and Troy FarrellFor many students, WIL begins in their first year of the Bachelor of Science through a unit that introduces them to authentic environmental data from the Queensland Government’s Water Quality Investigation (WQI) Team.

Students learn how scientists collect, clean, analyse and communicate data that helps inform decisions about Queensland’s waterways. They hear directly from environmental experts about sampling methods, data quality and how scientific evidence is used in practice before applying these skills to their own investigations.

Bachelor of Science (Biological Sciences) student and Dean's Scholar Becky Poynton said the experience changed the way she viewed data and environmental science.

“Using practical data from the Queensland Government’s Water Quality Investigation Team shifted my perspective on water quality as a career path and gave real purpose to my analysis,” Becky said.

"This experience has influenced my understanding of intricacies in everyday things and how minor deviations can highlight significant statistical and biological impacts. I am definitely more comfortable handling data, working with code and visualising findings in my own style."

Why WIL matters for your science career

Work Integrated Learning is more than just gaining experience. It’s about developing the skills and confidence to become a future scientist

Through WIL, QUT science students learn how to:

  • Collect and analyse scientific data
  • Approach complex problems using evidence
  • Communicate scientific ideas clearly
  • Work alongside professionals in real research and industry environments

From their first year through to graduation, students have opportunities to see how science works beyond the textbook and discover where their own science journey could lead.
