Emma Studerus, 23 May, 2022
Emma loves to make sense of data and use her analytical skills to solve real-world issues. She's good at statistics and mathematics and has a programming background. Data science is where all these skills meet.
What made you choose to study at QUT?
I chose QUT because it was the only university that offered a Bachelor of Data Science as a standalone course in 2021. I also heard that QUT offers excellent real-world experience and practical learning, which motivated me to apply.
What's your favourite aspect of your data science degree?
Honestly, I like everything about the Bachelor of Data Science! I like the way it’s designed so that you learn both practical and theoretical skills. The teachers are great and with all the resources and support services offered at QUT, it's comforting to know that you can get help when you need it.
What's been the greatest challenge so far?
I think the most challenging part for me as a mature-age student was to get back into the mindset of studying, keeping focused and juggling the demands of family and work. I believe choosing a degree that I'm very passionate about has helped me to stay motivated and keep focused throughout my study.
As a full-time student with family responsibilities and a part-time job, flexible learning is very important. I find that online learning and being able to catch up on workshops if I miss one is very helpful. Also, being able to choose the workload of my studies with a few clicks from the comfort of my home is very important.
What's your advice for someone thinking about studying data science at uni next year?
My advice for someone thinking of studying at QUT is to think carefully about what you’d like to achieve out of this experience and commit to it. Always stay positive and know that there is help available if you need it.
