A green, prosperous, and equitable future for all

We are joining a global celebration of Earth Day on Saturday 22 April. This year's theme is all about investing in our planet. At the QUT Faculty of Science, we investigate innovative ways to protect and preserve the environment. Here are some exciting projects that our colleagues are working on right now.

Our researchers are doing some incredible work, such as the Reef Restoration and Adaptation Program (RRAP) which focuses on restoring and preserving the Great Barrier Reef. The program aims to develop innovative solutions that will help the Reef adapt and thrive in a changing environment. They're working on everything from growing heat-tolerant corals to creating artificial structures that can provide new habitats for marine life.

We're also proud of our colleagues’ research into renewable energy and materials development. Researchers in the Centre for Clean Energy Technologies and Practices design and fabricate advanced materials for electrolysis, energy storage and other applications, including solar cells, light-emitting diodes and photodetectors. Useful materials are scaled up and integrated into renewable energy systems at lab scale and pilot-plant scale.

And let's not forget the Centre for Agriculture and the Bioeconomy’s work in banana biotechnology! The team is working to develop disease-resistant banana varieties that can help secure the future of this important crop. By using cutting-edge biotechnology techniques, they are developing bananas that can withstand the devastating effects of diseases such as Panama disease and black sigatoka.

If you're keen to make a difference in the world and develop solutions to some of our generation's biggest challenges, explore our Earth Science undergraduate degree. This course provides students with the knowledge and skills needed to identify solutions to critical issues facing the health of our planet.

We're passionate about investing in our planet and know that you are too! Whether it's through supporting research, studying a science degree, or making personal choices that reduce our impact on the environment, we can all make a positive difference. Let's work together towards a green, prosperous, and equitable future for all.
