QUT Bachelor of Mathematics alumnus, Rob Lucas, shares his experience from university and beyond.

What did you study at QUT?

I studied Applied and Computational Mathematics here at QUT, and I minored in Chemistry and Spatial Science, so essentially, map making.

What was your time at QUT like?

QUT gave me a lot of fantastic opportunities, certainly in internships and practical classes, where I could actually apply the things I was learning, which was excellent.

What has your career looked like after graduating?

After I left uni, I went and worked in public transport, trains and buses, and it sparked a love inside me that I continue to this day. Then, I worked in optimisation for mines and power plants, solving really interesting mathematical problems to help companies and industries produce optimal results and schedules that they can use to execute their very complicated operational problems.

What advice would you give to someone interested in studying mathematics?

My advice is to talk to people who share your passion. So, in lectures and in your degree, take the opportunity to build a community, and it will pay dividends in the future. Get involved in any industry events and any opportunity that you can. It makes a massive difference to have even a little bit of experience.
