Parents supporting their year-12 student at QUT Open Day

A parents and carers' guide to mid-year entry at QUT

If your Year 12 graduate is still weighing up their options — or they started a course and it doesn’t feel right — a mid-year university start (Semester 2) can be a genuinely smart move. It’s not “second best”. It’s often more considered, more confident, and better aligned with where they’re heading.

Below, you’ll find the current mid-year (July) entry options in science, information technology (IT), data science and maths.

First: what “mid-year intake” actually means

Universities usually run on two main study periods (called semesters).

  • Semester 1 usually begins in February/March.
  • Semester 2 (mid-year intake) begins in July.

For Semester 2, 2026 at QUT:

  • Welcome Week: 13–17 July 2026
  • Classes start: 20 July 2026

Why mid-year can be the “right timing” (not a delay)

Parents often worry that starting mid-year means their child is “behind”. In reality, it can be a practical reset — especially when the last 12–18 months have been full-on.

Mid-year entry can help when:

  • They needed more time to decide (a thoughtful choice now beats a rushed choice in February).
  • Results didn’t go to plan, so they want to explore a different (but still strong) pathway.
  • They’re already at uni and considering switching, rather than pushing through a course that doesn’t fit.

A mid-year start can also support a smoother transition if they’re finishing work, travel or other commitments mid-year.

How applications work

A few terms you’ll likely see:

  • QTAC: The Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre processes applications for most undergraduate university courses (including QUT).
  • Prerequisites: These are the Year 12 subjects (or equivalent) a student needs for a particular course. If a course has prerequisites, it will say so in the “entry requirements” section.
  • Advanced standing (credit): If your child has already studied at uni (or in some cases through other recognised learning), they may be able to receive credit so they don’t repeat content. QUT refers to this as “advanced standing”.

A simple way to help your child choose (without pressure)

If your teen is unsure, a helpful approach is:

  • Step 1: Pick 2–3 course pages to read together (start with interest, not prestige).
  • Step 2: Check the entry requirements/prerequisites on each page.
  • Step 3: Talk through what they’d like their weeks to look like (lab/fieldwork, coding/projects, maths/problem-solving).
  • Step 4: If they’re switching from another uni course, look into advanced standing (credit).

And if they’re still not 100% sure? That’s normal. A mid-year start can be a calm, confident way to begin — especially when the alternative is waiting and worrying.

Next step: bookmark July dates and start exploring

If your child is aiming for a Semester 2 start, QUT’s mid-year page is the best place to keep an eye on dates and the application pathway.

  • Start in July (Semester 2): Welcome Week 13–17 July 2026; classes start 20 July 2026
  • Undergraduate applications are via QTAC. Check out the Application Guide.
