Starting your university studies can be daunting. You’re beginning a new chapter in life and taking a big step towards your dream career.

You might be asking yourself lots of questions. Am I going to keep up with my peers? What if I get lost on campus? Can I get help with my assessments? And most importantly, how do I make friends at uni?

What is the one thing you wish you’d known before starting uni?

That’s a question we often ask our students and though there are hundreds of answers, one of the most common points students make is that uni is not a big scary place. There are so many ways to connect with like-minded people and find your tribe.

Here are our students' top three tips for making friends at university:

1. Join a student club

There are so many student clubs and societies you can join at QUT. Whether you are a chess fanatic, beach volleyball player, book worm or woman studying tech, there is a club out there for you. Head over to the QUT Guild (student union) website to explore the full range.

2. Turn up to classes

It might sound like a no-brainer, but actually turning up to classes is probably the easiest way to meet people at uni. Don’t just take our word for it, here’s double-degree student Dom’s advice:

“There are a number of ways to make friends at uni. Of course, there are clubs and societies, but I'd say the best way is just to get involved in class as early as possible because everyone's there to meet people and they will help you through the study." Dom Malt, QUT mathematics and engineering student

3. Connect through sports

QUT’s social sports program runs throughout the year and includes activities like football, netball, esports (yes, we have an esports arena!) and swimming. Meeting up regularly with a group of people for social sports or exercise is a great way to build friendships. It can also do wonders for your mental health and help you focus on your learning.
