What subjects should I study at school?

If you don't know what you want to do when you finish school, choose subjects that:

  • you like or have an interest in
  • you're likely to do well in.

If you want to come to university after Year 12 and you think you know what you'd like to study, have a look at the entry requirements for your course and plan to study any subjects you'll need for assumed knowledge or prerequisites.

Experience QUT while you're at school

Our START QUT program offers high-achieving students the chance to experience university while in Year 12. You can study up to two QUT units, letting you:

  • find out about different areas of study
  • sample university life first-hand.

Getting in to uni

Each university has different admission pathways and requirements that you should consider before you apply.

You will generally be considered for entry based on your OP or selection rank, although some courses have other entry requirements, like auditions, interviews or portfolios. Most of our courses have some assumed knowledge or prerequisites that you'll need to have studied to get in to the course.

You may be eligible for an adjustment to your selection rank (and equivalent OP score) through some of our admission pathways depending on your circumstances. We also have an OP guarantee if you have an OP 1-5, which means that you'll be guaranteed an offer for most of our courses.

If you're worried you won't get into the course you want, make sure you explore the options for getting into uni.
