Uses of exosomes as therapeutic delivery systems
Exosomes are small (40-120 nm), stable, lipid bilayer nanovesicles identified in biological fluids (e.g. in milk, blood, urine and saliva). They contain a diverse array of signalling molecules, including mRNA, microRNA (miR), proteins, lipids and membrane receptors, and they interact with target cells via multiple pathways. The cargo of circulating exosomes can be indicative of a specific tissue’s health status, granting the capacity for use of exosomes as a tool for disease diagnosis. Moreover, they have many of the features …

Early prevention of inflammation-related diseases: characterization and use of milk and infant formula
Our belief in the importance of the 'first thousand days' and the critical part that nutrition plays has led my group to studies evaluating the composition and actions of milk and infant formula. Our studies of exosomes in biological fluids have led us to consider their presence and potential roles in milk and thus nutrition. To date, we have mainly determined proteomic contents (cargo) of exosomes but have been increasingly swayed by the literature suggesting important roles for microRNAs in general …

The interplay between environmental and genetic risk factors in the etiology of mental health disorders
Mental health disorders (e.g., depression, anxiety, substance use) are the leading cause of global disease burden in the young adult population. Twin and family studies show that both genetic and environmental factors play a large role in the aetiology of these disorders. The Translational Neurogenomics group aims to identify genetic risk factors for a range of mental health and substance use disorders, and investigate the interplay between genetic and environmental risk factors.UK Biobank is a major national and international health …

My flow: Menstrual cycle Femtech for elite athlete performance optimisation through wearable technology
There is a need for additional studies to monitor on-field performance parameters in female elite athletes (Meignié 2021). We know that wearable sensors can be used to monitor the physiological and biochemical profile of athletes (Seshadri 2019), and a combination of several wearables is going to be more effective for accessing all relevant parameters (Düking 2016). However, there is limited research on the effects of menstrual cycle phases on elite athlete performance (Meignié 2021).This proposed research aims to bridge the …

Blast response and safety assessment of transport tunnels
Transport tunnels are important components of the transport systems in major cities. They can be vulnerable to bomb explosions caused by accidental or deliberate means. This project will evaluate the vulnerability of transport tunnels to credible blast events and the influence of key parameters. We'll then propose measures to mitigate the adverse effects of such explosions to maximise the safety of passengers, infrastructure and transport vehicles.

Evaluation of language models and word embedding methods for natural language processing applications
In deep learning models, language models and word embedding methods have become popular to understand the context of text data. There exist many variants of these methods and have different limitations. This project will introduce you to the hot topic of language models and the fields of Natural Language Processing and Text Mining.

Parameter identifiability for stochastic processes in biological systems
Stochastic models are used in biology to account for inherent randomness in many cellular processes, for example gene regulatory networks. Noise is often thought to obscure information, however, there is an increasing understanding that some randomness contains vitally important information about underlying biological processes. When applying these models to interpret and learn from data, unknown parameters in the model need to be estimated. However, not all data will contribute to a given estimation task regardless of the data quantity and quality. …

Development of a microfluidic sample processing integrated robot (micro SPIN-R)
Microfluidic devices are increasingly relied upon to address the complexity of in-vitro disease models that are intended to mimic and provide insight into in-vivo processes and reactions to novel therapies and in turn, can become powerful companion diagnostic devices essential for predicting and individual patient’s reaction to a particular treatment. However, as these microfluidic devices become more and more prominent and necessary for addressing the drug screening and disease modeling needs of the industry, we have observed a lack in …

Why do epithelial cells have antigen processing machinery?
Epithelial Cells (ECs) constitute the border between the host immune system and an environment teeming with inhaled antigens. Work from us and others has highlighted that ECs have the ability to express the antigen processing and presentation machinery, Major Histocompatibility Complex class II (MHC II) that is important in initiating immune responses. MHC II expression and function on mucosal epithelial cells, is not well understood.Whilst MHC II is expressed by ECs, and is altered with inflammation, there is a paucity …

Development of a 3D Printed Nasal Model to Study Viral-Airway Interactions
As airway infections become pandemic worldwide, airway models to investigate pathogen infection mechanism and nasal drug delivery is now increasingly important. However, current airway models cannot mimic the triad coupling of human nasal anatomical geometries, aerosol flow and biological responses (e.g. infection and inflammation) from the nasal epithelium.Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models are used for simulating pathological airflow patterns resulting from anatomical structural changes of the nasal cavities, but they cannot measure phenotypic or functional alterations in the nasal epithelium …

Wound care in regional/rural Queensland
Barriers to health care for regional/rural residents often relate to the limited availability of local health services and resources and the distance needed to seek suitable specialised services. Wounds experienced in rural and regional areas are often dependent upon the types of employment available, recreational pursuits and risk-taking behaviours. The prevalence of non-communicable lifestyle related risk factors (such as obesity and poor nutrition) and the propensity for an ageing population in rural and regional areas, positions this population group as one …

Identifying disease distress in patients with chronic venous leg ulcers
Venous leg ulcers (VLUs) make up 70% of all chronic leg ulcers. Unfortunately, around 30% of VLUs fail to heal in a 24-week period often despite evidence-based practice. Chronic VLUs impose a significant burden on people with these ulcers. Disease related distress has been explored in diabetes and inflammatory bowel disease but has not been explored in chronic wounds.Research has completed phase one of this study (secondary analysis of existing data), phase two (focus group to explore the findings), phase …
