Five QUT academics have been recognised for their excellence in Australia’s highest university teaching awards, announced last night (February 25) by Universities Australia.
Associate Professor Sarah Holland-Batt and Higher Education Academy Senior Fellows Associate Professor Alice Payne, Dr Jenna Gillett-Swan, Dr Sue Taylor and Dr Sarah Dart received 2019 Australian Awards for University Teaching (AAUT) Citations for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning.
AAUT awards acknowledge recipients as being among Australia’s most exceptional university teachers, demonstrating an outstanding contribution to student learning through dedication to quality teaching.
QUT received the highest number of individual citations among the 31 institutions awarded last night, an acknowledgment of the calibre of the University’s educators.
QUT Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President (Education) Professor Robina Xavier congratulated all the award winners.
“We’re delighted to see QUT academics recognised for their achievements,” she said. “These awards are testament to the dedication and experience of our academics and the University’s real-world focus. They also affirm that QUT is hitting top benchmarks in our teaching quality and student experience.”
The citation winners work across QUT’s faculties and represent academics in various phases of their careers.
Associate Professor Sarah Holland-Batt, right, from QUT’s Creative Industries Faculty, was recognised for her inspirational modelling of a writing career and transformative industry linkages that stimulate active learning and prepare students for self-directed employment in the creative industries.
Associate Professor Alice Payne, left, also from Creative Industries, was awarded for her work developing fashion students as informed, imaginative and ethical decision-makers, capable of business, design and material innovation in shaping a sustainable future for their industry.
Dr Jenna Gillett-Swan, right, from the Faculty of Education, was acknowledged for thinking outside the box in addressing the access and equity needs of external pre-service teachers through innovative and technologically-enhanced teaching environments and institutional leadership.
The citation for Dr Sue Taylor, left, from the QUT Business School, is for developing a holistic, inclusive and sustainable intercultural team-building and peer-review focus which inspires students to learn with, and through, technology-enhanced, collaborative interactions.
Dr Sarah Dart, right, an early career academic in the QUT Academy of Learning and Teaching, was recognised for her pioneering worked-example videos that use conversational ‘think-aloud’ narration to illustrate and develop problem-solving skills for students in engineering and mathematics.
