Clinical physiologists work as members of multidisciplinary teams to gain competencies in cardiac, sleep, neurosciences and respiratory science. To work in the profession, students must gain a number of employment competencies, which are now recognised and required by professional bodies. Clinical physiologists work in teams, communicate with patients and staff, must understand cultural issues and sensitivities, privacy and confidentiality and infection control. Practical competencies developed include how to work with patients to apply techniques commonly used in cardiac sciences, neuroscience, respiratory science and sleep science. Students also require a basic understanding of imaging, including echocardiography, and the pharmacology of commonly used drugs.
