Compliance Checking of Automated Vehicle Law-Abiding Behaviour

Automated Vehicles (AVs) are designed and programmed to follow traffic rules. However, the current traffic rules were designed for humans. These rules often contain open texture expressions, exceptions, and potential conflicts, which makes it hard for AVs to follow. This thesis presents an automatic compliance checking framework to assess AVs behaviour against current traffic rules by addressing these issues. Specifically, it proposes a framework to determine which traffic rules and open texture expressions need some additional interpretation. The evaluation result shows that the proposed framework is a promising system for checking Automated Vehicle interpretation and compliance with current traffic rules.

How Do Adults Experience a Wellbeing-Through-Writing Program?

Supervisors

  • Adjunct Professor Jill Maree Franz  (Associate Supervisor)
  • Professor Jane Elizabeth Shakespeare-Finch  (Principal Supervisor)

Citation

Evidence shows writing is good for us. The mystery is how writing facilitates and sustains health and well being. Using a phenomenological salutogenic (strengths-based) theoretical framework, this study involved a four-month online writing group program. It supported participants to work on writing projects of their choice. Interviews with participants at four timepoints showed the program was life changing. The research resulted in the development of a model demonstrating how writing can achieve wellbeing: the LOCH model. The primary finding was the importance of languaging the feeling body through writing to health and wellbeing policy and practice.

Attention Management to Improve Fallback-Readiness in Conditional Automated Vehicles

Supervisors

  • Professor Daniel McCarthy Johnson  (Associate Supervisor)
  • Professor Andry Rakotonirainy  (Associate Supervisor)
  • Professor Ronald Schroeter  (Principal Supervisor)

Citation

This work explores the management of driver attention in Conditional Automated Driving (CAD) to improve situation awareness for safer control transitions. The research develops an attention management system that facilitates interleaved transitions between non-driving-related activities and vehicle supervision. The system is based on the encoded information of automation reliability to indicate the likelihood of an upcoming transition. The research addresses three research questions and presents a tool to prototype and evaluate the impacts of interfaces. The findings suggest that managed interruptions initiate a phase of interleaved attention, hinting towards improved situation awareness, and may benefit safety without negatively impacting usability.

Investigating the Drug Driving Problem: Contributing Factors and Enforcement-related Countermeasures

Supervisors

  • Professor Narelle Lorraine Haworth  (Associate Supervisor)
  • Dr Oscar Hernando Oviedo Trespalacios  (Associate Supervisor)
  • Professor Barry Craig Watson  (Principal Supervisor)

Citation

Worldwide, there is growing concern about the role of drug driving in road crashes. To better understand the problem, this research investigated the personal, social, and legal factors contributing to drug driving. It included a systematic review of the existing literature and a large-scale survey of drivers. The key factors associated with drug driving were higher levels of drug dependence, successfully avoiding detection in the past and anticipating greater rewards for the behaviour. The findings indicate that a comprehensive approach is required to counteract the problem including more effective enforcement practices and rehabilitation programs for those caught drug driving.

A Social Systems Approach to Understanding Problematic Internet Use Amongst Adolescents in China

Supervisors

  • Weiqing Chen  (External Supervisor)
  • Associate Professor Adrian Bruce Kelly  (Associate Supervisor)
  • Associate Professor Esben Stig Strodl  (Principal Supervisor)

Citation

This PhD explored a range of psychosocial risk factors for adolescent problematic internet use (PIU). A survey was conducted among 6552 adolescents (aged 10-19 years) in Guangdong, China. The findings suggest that adolescents experiencing less warmth, and more conflict from parents, teachers and peers are more likely to experience PIU, with these associations mediated by mental health concerns including conduct problems and school anxiety. Therefore, this PhD highlights that to reduce PIU, improving the quality of family and school relationships can be an important pathway, as well as adolescents' mental health, with targeted school and family based prevention and intervention programs.

Dissociating Lower-Level Attribute-Specific Contextual Expectation Violations within the Human Visual System

Supervisors

  • Dr Hinze Hogendoorn  (External Supervisor)
  • Professor Ottmar Volker Lipp  (Associate Supervisor)
  • Dr Jonathan Edward Robinson  (External Supervisor)
  • Dr Naohide Yamamoto  (Principal Supervisor)

Citation

This work contained three neuro imaging studies that collectively tested how implicit expectations concerning the different visual attributes of simple objects (e.g., their colour, shape, and orientation) modulate neural processing of this visual information. Results converged on a notion that this modulation occurs in a somewhat attribute-agnostic manner, albeit at distinct relative latencies. This inference substantially departs from underlying assumptions of the current models of predictive processing - a set of promising theories of perception, learning, and cognition - highlighting the need for future research in this area.

Gamified Web-Delivered Attentional Bias Modification Training for the Management of Chronic Pain

Supervisors

  • Dr Geert Crombez  (External Supervisor)
  • Professor Daniel McCarthy Johnson  (Associate Supervisor)
  • Dr Dimitri Van Ryckeghem  (External Supervisor)
  • Associate Professor Melanie Jade White  (Principal Supervisor)

Citation

This doctoral research program consists of three studies that developed and evaluated the effects of a novel web-delivered cognitive training intervention with game elements targeting pain and pain-related health outcomes in adults with chronic pain. The findings of this research have several clinical implications concerning the incorporation of gamification techniques into cognitive training tasks, the use of evaluated linguistic stimuli to investigate the cognitive processing of pain, and the therapeutic application of gamified cognitive training interventions for the management of chronic pain. Recommendations for future research are provided to further expand the existing literature of gamification, cognition, and chronic pain.
