Our Graduate Certificate in Business (Managing and Leading in the Public Sector) is designed as an extension of our Emerging Leaders Program (ELP) short course modules, to provide you with a postgraduate level qualification in managing and leading in the public sector.

In the ELP short course you undertake four modules and at the conclusion of each, you have the opportunity to undertake the optional award extension unit for that module. This additional unit of study involves attendance at a workshop and two assessments for each module. The successful completion of these four optional award extension units provides you with a Graduate Certificate in Business (Managing and Leading in the Public Sector).

Course articulation

You can also choose to complete eight ELP modules and eight ELP optional award extension units, which leads to a Graduate Diploma in Business (Managing and Leading in the Public Sector).

Successful completion of each award extension unit may provide you with advanced standing in QUT’s Master of Business, Master of Business Administration or another postgraduate QUT program.

The Graduate Certificate in Business (Managing and Leading in the Public Sector) is made up of 48 credit points. Each unit in this course is worth 12 credit points.

You will study two compulsory (core) award extension units and then choose two (option) award extension elective units from the list below.

  • Communicating for Results
  • Navigating Risk, Ethics and Politics
  • Strategically Managing Public Funds
  • Leading Strategic Initiatives and Programs

  • Leadership of Strategic Supplier Relationships

Entry requirements

To be eligible for this course, you must:

  • have a completed recognised bachelor degree in any discipline with a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 4.5 (on QUT's 7-point scale)
  • have a minimum of five years' full-time post-degree work experience with minimum of three years' relevant professional work experience, and two years' minimum supervisory/management experience
  • provide a copy of your CV demonstrating relevant work experience
  • if required, attend an interview and undertake the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT is the worldwide standard in aptitude assessment for admission to postgraduate management programs) and achieve a minimum score of 550.

Alternative entry pathway

Applicants who do not meet the minimum entrance criteria for the Graduate Certificate of Business may apply for alternative entry. You must:

  • have a minimum of nine years' full-time work experience with a minimum of six years' relevant professional work experience and three years' supervisory/management experience
  • provide a CV demonstrating relevant work experience
  • attend an interview with the course coordinator or nominee
  • if required, undertake the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT is the worldwide standard in aptitude assessment for admission to postgraduate management programs) and achieve a minimum score of 550.
