Nurse in intensive care unit checks computer monitor

Kaila Porter’s postgraduate studies have helped her advance her nursing career.

I co-ordinate a team within Intensive Care and provide clinical nursing care for critically ill patients. I also manage specialty practice portfolios, quality improvement projects, and I’m a principal investigator within my own research project exploring the perception of preparedness in new-graduate nurses within critical care.

I chose this career because I was excited for the flexibility nursing offered. If I ever wanted to travel, change specialties, or move throughout roles within the field of nursing, I knew I could. Rarely do other careers provide this level of flexibility, alongside the stability of permanent employment.

My post-graduate studies allowed me to advance within my clinical role within Intensive Care and provided me with opportunities to teach within tertiary education. My favourite role within nursing thus far has been clinical facilitation.

I really enjoy teaching and watching new staff members flourish throughout their careers. I think this is the most rewarding part of being a leader—knowing I have played a part in shaping the education, work ethic and attitudes of novice critical care nurses, who will go on to care for some of the sickest patients our state has to offer. It’s very rewarding.
