Thesis Title

Labour Market Performance and Wellbeing in Developing Countries

Supervisors

  • Associate Professor Dipanwita Sarkar  (Principal Supervisor)
  • Associate Professor Jayanta Sarkar  (Associate Supervisor)
  • Professor Benno Torgler  (Associate Supervisor)

Citation

The thesis comprises three independent studies on i. the impact of Social Safety Nets (Bangladesh); ii. gender-specific effect of work hours on health and thresholds of optimal work hours; iii. empirical link between work efforts and child health (Indonesia). It identifies inefficiencies prevailing in developing economies and recommends policies to improve labour market performance and the well-being of underprivileged communities. All three studies conduct empirical analyses employing advanced micro econometric methods such as multiple regression discontinuity design (MRDD), Inverse probability weighted regression adjustment (IPWRA), two-stage probability least square (2SPLS)and instrumental variable (IV) approach on nationally representative household survey data.

Thesis Title

Bridging Complexity and Behavioural Economics: The Constrained Methods Matrix

Supervisors

  • Dr Ho Fai Chan  (Associate Supervisor)
  • Professor Benno Torgler  (Principal Supervisor)
  • Dr Stephen Graham Whyte  (Associate Supervisor)

Citation

This thesis develops the Constrained Methods Matrix (CMM), enriching the behavioural economist's toolkit by facilitating the application of complex systems thinking in behavioural economics and other social sciences. Across 12 self-contained chapters, this thesis applies the CMM to provide novel research contributions and policy-relevant insights, focused on two timely problem areas: addressing socio-economic challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, and integrating Artificial Intelligence into human society. This thesis forges a new path in economics by integrating insights from diverse disciplines into a coherent framework, offering a multidisciplinary, complex systems approach that enhances understanding of dynamic economic phenomena in real-world contexts.

Thesis Title

Machine Learning Applications in Asset Pricing

Supervisors

  • Professor Adam Edmond Clements  (Principal Supervisor)
  • Dr Jerry Chienwei Ho  (Associate Supervisor)
  • Professor Richi Nayak  (Associate Supervisor)

Citation

This thesis applies machine learning (ML) techniques to re-evaluate longstanding problems in financial economics. By using ML to model investor belief formation and identify the risk factors influencing these beliefs, the studies presented highlight the significant impact of cognitive biases and media narratives on investor behaviour. The approach taken in these studies departs from the traditional assumption of rational expectations (RE), and the findings offer valuable insights into empirical asset price movements.

Thesis Title

Consumption, Value and Response: An Interdisciplinary Thesis on Australian Women's Wellbeing

Supervisors

  • Professor Uwe Dulleck  (Principal Supervisor)
  • Professor Rebekah Russell-Bennett  (Associate Supervisor)

Citation

Limited research into decision-making of Australian women and its impact on their wellbeing exists. An interdisciplinary approach to wellbeing integrating behavioural economics and social marketing is utilised. Three quantitative studies investigate how personal and interpersonal factors, decision making, and stress responses affect wellbeing. Implications for policies enhancing the wellbeing are discussed. The research: documents the critical role that smoking, alcohol and physical activity has on wellbeing; underscores the significance of sleep on productivity and sustained wellbeing and that women cope with stress better as they age; and shows that government mandates during the pandemic restricted coping mechanisms reducing women's wellbeing.

Thesis Title

Mitigating Firm-Level Risks in Environmentally Sustainable Ways: Three Essays on Environment-Specific Political Risk, Credit Risk, and Stock Price Crash Risk

Supervisors

  • Professor Larelle June Chapple  (Associate Supervisor)
  • Dr Sarah Elise Osborne  (Associate Supervisor)
  • Dr Elisabeth Sinnewe  (Principal Supervisor)

Citation

In the face of current global climate change, corporate firms are increasingly exposed to greater environmental risk, leading to adverse financial consequences. This research explores how firms can mitigate their political risk, credit risk, and stock price crash risk in environmentally sustainable ways so that firms can secure favourable externalities along with their pro-environmental strategies to protect the environment. The findings suggest that green innovation is a useful tool to mitigate environment-specific political risk and credit risk, while a greater level of environment-specific political risk discourse in earnings conference calls with investors effectively mitigates future crash risk.

Thesis Title

Accounting for the Stateless: A History of the Indian Tamils in Sri Lanka 1820-2003

Supervisors

  • Dr Annette Quayle  (Principal Supervisor)
  • Andrew Geoffrey West  (Associate Supervisor)

Citation

This research explored the role of accounting in reporting Indian Tamil migrants who worked in Sri Lankan tea plantations from 1820 to 2003. It presents the argument that their history of statelessness emerged through the interrelations of variables, including accounting practices, rationalities of the state, and citizenship identity. The study contributes to accounting literature by building a novel theoretical structure, following Michel Foucault that applies governmentality and accounting constellation. It enhances understanding of the role played by in the British and Ceylon governments' creation and perpetuation of a category of stateless Indian Tamil labourers in Ceylon colonies.

Thesis Title

Agricultural Intensification and Negative Externalities: Farmers' Profitability and Their Responses To Changing Status Quo

Supervisors

  • Associate Professor Viet Ngu Hoang  (Associate Supervisor)
  • Associate Professor Boon Liat Lee  (Associate Supervisor)
  • Professor Clevo Wilson  (Principal Supervisor)

Citation

This thesis is designed to examine multiple agricultural-related issues. There are two areas of study. Each is based on a single survey, the first survey is related to Study 1 while the rest of the studies relied on Survey 2. Study 1 involves examining the current farming practices that are characterised as unsustainable and Study 2 involves identifying potential solutions in terms of policy instruments. Profit analysis and a choice experiment are the two distinct methods utilized to analyse the primary data gathered from a field survey conducted in the Jaffna district of the northern province of Sri Lanka.
