Christine was suggested Brisbane as an excellent place to study by her university in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Intrigued, she delved into researching the QUT design degrees that were available. Christine shares her experiences as a student at QUT.
Inside the classroom
Throughout my journey as a Bachelor of Design (Interaction Design) student, I have been on an incredible path of learning and personal growth. The course delivery provided me with the opportunity to explore a vast array of different designs and creative arts, which are not typically available in traditional universities. Having access to advanced technology and facilities was a vital aspect of my time at university. I would say that this course is ideal for creative individuals who, like me, enjoy storytelling and standing out from the crowd.
I also found the academics to be exceptional. They offered innovative and insightful ideas and approaches that were entirely new to me. Seeing things from their perspective opened my eyes to a new world of detail and broadened my understanding of design. In addition, the workshop support staff were approachable and highly skilled in handcraft works, as well as knowledgeable about the distinctive materials and requirements of various projects.
From campus to campus
One of the highlights of my student experience has been the diversity of character that varies from building to building and campus to campus. As a design student, I am mostly based at the Kelvin Grove campus, but one of my favourite spots to study at is P Block on the Gardens Point campus. This location is ideal for me because of the peaceful environment and access to The Cube, a cool digital interactive display that students can access for learning, or just when they need a (well-earned) study break. The building has a unique atmosphere and environment, which is conducive to productive studying. Additionally, I enjoy studying in E Block at the Kelvin Grove campus. The Sphere has a sort of magic that keeps me awake after long periods of studying, making it an excellent spot for me. Although The Sphere is in the Education Precinct, students from all study areas are both welcomed and encouraged to use the incredible space.
Developing friendships among peers
As an introvert, I initially felt nervous about making friends in an unfamiliar city. However, I was able to connect with peers in the classroom and in university student clubs. I am active in CCM Brisbane (Campus Christian Movement) for Christian students at QUT, which made it easy to connect with other Christians. QUT-run events like the mooncake festival have also been a wonderful way to meet new people on campus.
QUT has definitely changed my expectations about the life of a university student. It is funny to think that I started the degree without really knowing what it was all about. However, as time has passed, I have found myself learning more and more about my field of study, and I am so glad that it is something I have been interested in since day one.
