Susan Anderson

Rebecca Gundalech, 13 February, 2021

A proven global leader, Susan Anderson has led Uber across Australia and New Zealand for the last two years and recently took on an expanded leadership role to include North Asia. Prior to joining Uber, Susan inspired some of the world's most innovative teams in leadership roles at Amazon and Bain & Co.

1. What has been your career highlight to date?

Stepping into leading our North Asia business is a real highlight. North Asia includes some of our most complex but attractive markets, and it has been a highlight to be able to work with the local teams to put in place strategies to accelerate growth and help cities move better.  It was also a highlight to be able to make meaningful improvements to the diversity of leadership in my team, creating a bench of strong female leaders in decision making roles.

2. What leadership values are important to you in business?

Being authentic and open about your strengths and faults. It is important to be honest about where you need other people to be strong. Leaders who come in with all the answers struggle to inspire.

3. What do you see as the biggest challenge facing Uber in the next five years?

We need to build sufficient momentum with cities in which we operate in order to build the right infrastructure for the future - whether that’s micromobility, electric cars, and that which encourages strong use of public transport alongside first and last mile transport options. We want to take the tech and vision we have within Uber and work with cities that have the boldness and courage to make our cities move better.

4. What advice would you give aspiring business leaders?

Say yes to opportunities, especially if you are unsure or have questions. If someone you trust is asking you to do something, take it on.

5. Can you give us a sneak preview of what you will speak about at the QUT Business Leaders' Forum?

I’ll talk about my professional journey - and how the first 15 years of my career gave me the backpack of experience to tackle the challenges and opportunities in front of me at Uber as well as what sets Uber apart from other tech companies.
