Preventing grate over-heating in solid fuel boilers

The furnace grate is a key component of the many boilers that burn solid fuels. Many biomasses with large particle sizes such as woodchip burn on furnace grates and grate combustion assists the combustion of fuels that burn in mostly in suspension such as sugar cane bagasse and sawdust. While furnace grates are successfully used in the combustion of a range of solid fuels, they can overheat and fail, resulting in downtime and high costs for grate replacement.

Assessing the greater need for drug quantity threshold requirements in anti-doping sport cases

Technological advancements in the equipment and laboratories used by anti-doping bodies, means that minute levels of prohibited substances can be detected in an athlete's blood or urine. This had led to an increase in athletes testing positive for prohibited substances, where the quantity of that substance in the athlete's sample is very low. This project will consider whether and how the issue of threshold requirements for prohibited substances should be further regulated.

Mathematical modelling of ecosystem tipping points in Antarctica

Slight variations in the seasonal timing of Antarctic ice melt can drastically shift the composition of local shallow-water ecosystems from being dominated by invertebrates to algae instead. Such "tipping point" events may become commonplace in the future due to climate change, not just in Antarctica but in many ecosystems worldwide. This project seeks to develop mathematical models of the interactions between Antarctic environmental conditions and the local shallow-water ecosystem states. These models could then be used to make predictions about the …
