Principal Researcher:

Dr Natalie Elms, School of Accountancy, QUT

Industry partner:

This project is funded by through the Colin Brain Governance Fellowship

What is the purpose of this research?

The aim of this project is to explore corporate governance practices in high-tech firms and examine whether a traditional governance approach is fit for purpose, or whether there is a more appropriate corporate governance model for high-tech firms.

Are you looking for people like me?

We are interested in hearing from those who have experience working with or on the board of a high-tech firm. For example, senior executives, board members or company secretary.

We are also interested in the perspectives of financial advisors and analysts who work with, and/or evaluate the performance and governance of high-tech firms. We define high-tech firms as those that emphasise invention and innovation in their business strategy and deploy a significant percentage of their financial resources to R&D.

What will you ask me to do?

Participate in an interview of up to 60 minutes duration. Interviews may be held face-to-face or remotely e.g. using Zoom, Teams or phone. All responses will remain anonymous.

You will be asked questions about the ideal board structure and composition for a high-tech firm; and/or how investors evaluate high-tech firms based on their governance and board structure.

Are there any risks for me in taking part?

There are no anticipated risks associated with this project.

Participating in the interview may create some inconvenience for you, including finding time in your busy schedule. To minimise inconvenience, interviews will be scheduled at a mutually convenient time and via your preferred medium (eg. face-to-face, phone, Zoom, Skype, etc).

Are there any benefits for me in taking part?

The findings from the study will be shared with participants.

Participants and their firms can benefit from the study findings through an improved awareness of how boards of high-tech firms can contribute maximum value and thereby identifying potential areas for improvement in their firms corporate governance structure and practices.

Will I be compensated for my time?

There is no direct compensation for this project other than the indirect benefits discussed above.
