Have you ever wondered how you could use IT to make your business more efficient?

The QUT academics who literally wrote the book on business process management (BPM) have turned their more than two decades of research and teaching experience into a free massive open online course (MOOC).

The new MOOC is based on the first comprehensive textbook ever written on the topic, Fundamentals of Business Process Management, co-authored by Professor Marcello La Rosa and Adjunct Professor Marlon Dumas from QUT's Science and Engineering Faculty.

The textbook is now used by more than 100 universities around the world and remains the most sought-after textbook in its field globally.

"Our BPM research group at QUT is one of the largest of its type worldwide and this MOOC is packed with our latest insights in the field as well as our world-leading research," Professor La Rosa said.

"BPM is a powerful tool for managing business processes with the ultimate goal of improving organisational performance - it helps us to understand how to overcome efficiency issues or create new customer experiences.

"Our MOOC will take you through each phase of the BPM lifecycle, teaching you mainstream techniques and tools for process identification, discovery, analysis, improvement, automation and monitoring.

"You'll also see how to apply those techniques and tools to a range of examples and case studies that show the power of BPM in practice.

"We cover not just how we fix a process, streamline it, add value to it or make it more cost effective, but also how we innovate business processes and create complete new process experiences."

Professor Dumas said the uptake of BPM initiatives, historically, had been the domain of large organisations.

"However, over the last decade many smaller organisations have developed an appetite for processes and process management to achieve cost efficiencies, grow their businesses and draw better value from external processes that impact on their business," he said.

"Digital disruption will be a huge driver of BPM initiatives among SMEs into the future as they try to adapt to the rapidly changing business environment."

The Fundamentals of BPM MOOC is designed for business, IT and project management professionals across small, medium and large businesses.

"The course starts from the very basic concepts and builds skills from the ground up," Professor Dumas said.

"No previous skills or knowledge of BPM are needed to undertake the seven-week course."

More than 4,000 people worldwide have already registered for the Fundamentals of BPM MOOC, which starts Monday October 12. Registrations will remain open throughout the course duration.
