Herston Biofabrication Institute _Prof Mia Woodruff

Australia-first Biofabrication Institute announced: QUT has partnered with Metro North Hospital and Health Service to establish the Herston Biofabrication Institute, the first institute in Australia dedicated to 3D technologies for the hospitals of the future.

High-tech sequencer will help crack genetic code: A Queensland-first DNA sequencer at QUT's Central Analytical Research Facility will empower researchers to investigate everything from improved cancer care to the discovery of new plant and bacterial species.

Joint Laboratory of Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering between QUT & China established: QUT and the Shanghai Institute of Ceramics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (SICCAS) have further cemented a long-running collaboration with the opening of the Joint Laboratory of Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering in Shanghai.

Poorer patients face malnutrition risk: Patients with chronic lung disease living in deprived areas are more likely to be malnourished than those from wealthier postcodes, a QUT study has found.

QUT & Sumitomo Electric to trial cutting-edge solar/battery technologies for Qld: QUT has partnered with Japanese leading manufacturer Sumitomo Electric Industries Ltd to trial and develop new renewable energy technologies with the potential to make Queensland’s energy system significantly more efficient, robust and sustainable.

Flat-pack, off-the-grid tiny house stars at QUT campus: Australia’s first-ever, flat-pack, off-the-grid tiny house is the star feature at QUT’s Gardens Point campus during the International Conference on Energy and Environment of Residential Buildings this week.

Footing the bill for a ‘silent’ sickness: The 'silent burden' of foot disease afflicts one in ten hospital patients, costing taxpayers billions and filling nearly 5,000 hospital beds each night, according to QUT research.

- Brisbane Times and The Courier-Mail kicked off media coverage for the new Herston Biofabrication Institute.
Crown-of-thorns starfish - nailed it!- QUT cricket researcher and sports scientist Dr Ian Renshaw was interviewed by 612 ABC's Steve Austin about his son Matt Renshaw's selection into the Australian Test side, with mentions in The Courier-Mail and The Newcastle Herald.
- Nine's Today featured Dr Matthew Dunbabin and the COTSbot (pictured).
ABC News, News 24 and ABCOnline featured The Cube as it hosted 360 school students for a robotic coding competition.
ABC Gold Coast ran a story on QUT nursing student Laura Rogers who will also study paramedicine next year, after being inspired by a CPR demonstration at last year's Schoolies event on the Gold Coast. 
- Associate Professor Nicolas Suzor wrote a piece for The Conversation that suggested a new show featuring Top Gear members might be the target of illegal downloaders in Australia. The article also appeared on ABC Online and PC & Tech Authority.

Dr Stephen Harrington (pictured) spoke with ABC’s PM program (also on ABC Radio Australia online) about the role social media had on “fake” news and the impact it had on the US election. The story also featured in NZ City.
Associate Professor Gary Mortimer told SmartCompany Australian suppliers could benefit from Aldi’s expansion into China, and was on Melbourne’s 3AW and 1116 SEN talking about Amazon’s plans for an online supermarket in Australia. He also told Quest in-store buying would win over online shopping this Christmas, and spoke to Nine News about the wine glut.
Professor Bill Caelli was interviewed on the 5AAA Adelaide morning program about computer security, stolen phone data and how meta data is sought after.
- A solar energy trial between QUT and a Japanese company ran online on Energy Source Distribution, Rockhampton’s Morning Bulletin and energymatters.com.
Dr Marina Alexander’s study to drop to 40kmh suburban speed limits was in The Chronicle.
- Bullying Awareness Week and impacts on adolescents saw Professor Marilyn Campbell interviewed by 2SerFM.

- Italian website Megamodo featured QUT Infiniti Engineering Academy recipient Jaden Partridge.
ABC’s Terri Begley did a live cross from the Dust fashion graduation show (which included student designs such as those pictured right by Alexandra Stokes).
- BNE Magazine featured experimental kombucha curd work by QUT fashion students led by academics Dean Brough and Dr Alice Payne.
Broadsheet wrote about an acclaimed new documentary on the Australian Ballet’s first Indigenous dancer Ella Havelka, made by filmmaker and QUT graduate Douglas Watkin.
Men’s Health Singapore profiled QUT marketing graduate Roanne Ho who is on Singapore’s national swimming team.
Professor Joanne Wood talked to 612 ABC Breakfast about a QUT study into older drivers.
7 News Mackay featured a story about the harvester robot Harvey which Dr Christopher Lehnert says has up to a 90 per cent success rate in harvesting sweet peppers.
Peter Lazzarini featured in Scienmag and The Medical News talking about the silent burden of foot disease.
MIT News wrote about its Global Entrepreneurship Bootcamp being held at QUT next March.

Associate Professor Karen Becker was part of a panel discussion on 612 ABC Brisbane Afternoons about the role of golf in business transactions.
- Fashion designer and PhD student Grace Lillian Lee was named by Cairns Post as among the top 30 most influential people in Far North Queensland.
Professor Greg Kyle wrote a piece for The Conversation arguing discount chemists are cheapening the quality of pharmacy, which also ran in The Australian Journal of Pharmacy and The Daily Bulletin.
Susan Hetherington did her regular segment on theatre on 612 ABC Brisbane Breakfast.
