QUT's Master of Business (Applied Finance) is the only Australian university course to make the grade in the UK-based Financial Times' higher education ranking.

The course, which sits within the QUT Business School, has been named the number one Australian university program in the Top 40 Masters in Finance pre-experience ranking and placed 40th internationally.

QUT Business School's Dr David Willis, the subject area co-ordinator for post graduate applied finance, said the top ranking showed the real-world lessons taught on campus were easily translated in the finance sector both in Australia and abroad.

"This proves that our focus on applied finance is highly regarded by students and industry and employees alike," he said.

"It also provides students an assurance that their degree is internationally recognised as high quality."

The ranking rates views of recent graduates, their salaries, and qualifications of academics and teaching staff.

"As well as having backgrounds in academia, our teaching staff are superannuation, accounting and banking professionals," he said.

"They not only enhance knowledge, but also pass on their expertise to our students."

Recognition for the QUT Business School came less than a week after QUT climbed 14 places to be ranked Australia's top university under 50 years old in the Times' Higher Education Top 100 Under 50 rankings.

Now ranked 26 in the world among universities less than 50 years old, the latest result identifies QUT as a rising star within the tertiary education and research sector.
