It’s big. But it’s the small details that count.

Finding out how to navigate the fine detail which underpins big data is a key theme for QUT’s newest massive open online course (MOOC).

Four free courses held from April 4 to June 27, spearheaded by Professor Kerrie Mengersen from the School of Mathematics, have been designed to accelerate careers for professionals across a range of industries.

Professor Mengersen said simple effective solutions were needed to manage, store and analyse data.

“Data needs to be refined and to be useful it’s important to examine a problem and solve it by asking the right questions,” she said.

“The courses are designed to help professions with a background in business, education, creative industries, law or medicine,” she said.

“They will learn how to turn complex information into knowledge by adding big data analytics to their skill set.

“We have selected the most well-known and important tools available to best apply big data management tools.”

It’s the third MOOC run by QUT academics and fulfils a commitment to increase access to education and improve community engagement with the university.

Professor Mengersen has acknowledged other experts heavily involved in the MOOC including  Associate Professor Tomasz Bednarz and Dr Steven Psaltis.

“For 12 hours over four weeks MOOC learners will engage with experts in their fields,” Professor Mengersen said.

“They understand how mathematics, statistics and machine learning fit together to solve big data problems,” Professor Mengersen said.

She said the courses have been led by a team of developers at ACEMS (Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Mathematical and Statistical Frontiers.)
