Join us to hear from speakers Heather Joseph, Executive Director, Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition (SPARC) and Emeritus Professor Tom Cochrane (QUT) to discuss the power of Open Access. This event will be chaired by Professor Virginia Barbour of the Australasian Open Access Strategy Group (AOASG).
SPARC is one of the leading international forces for effective open access policies and practices. As the primary advocate for U.S. open access policies, including the landmark National Institutes of Health (NIH) public access policy and a White House Directive, Heather Joseph will share insights on the U.S. and international state of Open Access (OA).
Tom Cochrane led QUT's OA policies in the early years of the OA movement. Under his leadership as the then Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Technology, Information and Llibrary Services), QUT became a global leader in the push for open access to its research outputs and was the world's first university to mandate open public access to its entire scholarly work in 2003. Tom will address the Australian Open Access situation, focusing on policy and practical challenges.

Heather Joseph - Scholarly Publishing & Academic Resources Coalition (SPARC)
Heather Joseph is a former journal publisher who has worked for both Elsevier and the American Society for Cell Biology (ACSB). However, in 2005, she changed direction and took up the position of Executive Director for the Scholarly Publishing & Academic Resources Coalition (SPARC), an open access (OA) advocacy group based in Washington D.C. SPARC has proved extremely effective at making the case for OA, and persuading researchers, institutions, funders and governments to embrace OA. In particular, Heather Joseph led SPARC’s efforts to secure the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) Public Access Policy and the recent White House Directive on Public Access to the Results of Publicly Funded Research.
Emeritus Professor Tom Cochrane - Queensland University of Technology (QUT)
Tom Cochrane is a former Deputy Vice-Chancellor at QUT, a recipient of an Order of Australia (AM) award and was the main driver behind QUT becoming the first university to introduce an open access policy. External appointments include Director, Australian Digital Alliance; Member, Library Board of Queensland; Director, Board of Knowledge Unlatched (UK); Member, Board of Enabling Open Scholarship (Europe). In his current role, as an Adjunct Professor in Faculty of Law at QUT, he is the co-leader of the Creative Commons project. Tom has a long-standing commitment to improving access to research outputs and the supporting infrastructure which is part of a wider general commitment to promoting access to knowledge and a fair go for every person in the copyright ecosystem.

Virginia Barbour is the Director of the Australasian Open Access Strategy Group She is based at QUT and has a long history of working in open access publishing, having joined PLOS in 2004 as one of the three founding editors of PLOS Medicine, finally becoming Medicine and Biology Editorial Director of PLOS in 2014. She was Chair of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) from 2012-2017.
