Biography
Hi :) I am a Senior Lecturer (U.S. equivalence of "Associate Professor") in Advertising and Public Relations at the QUT Business School. My research explores the dynamics of power and influence between organizations and publics as well as the roles of communication practitioners in facilitating interactions between the two.
I am a mixed methods researcher who has experience in using both qualitative and quantitative methods. I have used content analysis to examine how organizations and issues are presented in the news media. I have conducted interviews with practitioners to explore how they design and manage communication activities. I have conducted numerous surveys and experiments to examine publics' cognitions, attitudes and behavioral intentions. I have used methods of scale development to develop constructs to measure relational dynamics in communicative interactions. I have also used statistical methods to analyze industry datasets.
My research has been applied to multiple research contexts including corporate social responsibility, employee communication, health communication, government relations, hospitality and tourism, international relations, issues and crisis communication and public diplomacy. I have also published on industry practices including the use of social media for environmental scanning and the use of paid, earned, shared and owned (PESO) media for media planning.
I enjoy working with colleagues from different disciplines. I have co-authored with over 30 colleagues from 18 universities around the world, including four students and an industry collaborator. I have also been involved in research teams which have generated industry and consultancy research funding.
I am currently Associate Editor for the Journal of Public Diplomacy. I am also Secretary-elect for the International Communication Association (ICA) Public Relations Division.
My work has received numerous recognitions, the most recent of which are Top Faculty Paper Award from the ICA Public Relations Division, Fellowship from the Higher Education Academy and Page Legacy Scholar grants.
My research publications can be found on ResearchGate (https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Lisa-Tam).
