Physics Program: Electromagnetism Unleashed
A physics program for schools
With a collaboration between Street Science and Queensland University of Technology (QUT), students explore the scientific concept of Energy Transformations through a series of electromagnetism investigations. Electromagnetism is the interaction between electricity and magnetism and is one approach to generating electricity.
This physics-based Classroom Kit will show students in year 9 how kinetic energy and magnetic fields can generate electricity and how electrical fields can create magnetism. By the end of this hands-on lesson, students will be able to explain energy transfer and apply energy transformations to real-world scenarios.
Experiments include:
- Electromagnetism and the hand crank
- Build an Electromagnetic train
- Create a Spinning Copper Heart
In partnership with Boeing, QUT will continue to provide engaging and inspirational experiences to year 7-12 students in STEM to reach Queensland schools, with the Electromagnetism Unleashed workshop being one of them. With a focus on diversity, QUT targets the following cohorts to further our inclusive engagement strategy and to instil the belief in all participants that they too can become scientists and engineers in the future:
- Female schools
- Indigenous Australian schools and community programs
- Regional and outreach schools
Electromagnetism Unleashed, delivered by the Faculty of Engineering and STEM Ambassadors from Boeing, seeks to deliver this workshop to schools in Southwest Brisbane ( Logan, Marsden, Ipswich, etc.). Schools from these areas who participate in the workshop will also receive a kit for their school to keep and use with future students.
All workshops will need at least 2 full hours for delivery and can be delivered at your school or here at QUT.
If you would like to book the Electromagnetism Unleashed workshop, please email Keith Alexander, Student Engagement Coordinator at keith.alexander@qut.edu.au with the following information:
- Number of students
- Potential Dates (Provide at least 2) along with times
- Arrival time if attending QUT
