Architecture students who helped rebuild an historic Murphys Creek campsite that was damaged during last year's floods have been recognised for their work with a state award.
The Real Studio QUT project won an award for Small Project Architecture at the Australian Institute of Architects' 2012 Queensland Architecture Awards on Friday, June 22.
The shed, designed and built by QUT architecture, interior design, industrial design and landscape architecture students, provides bushwalkers and horses on the Bicentennial National Trail campsite at Murphys Creek with shelter.
Project leader Alison McDonald, who lectures in QUT's School of Design, which is now part of the Creative Industries Faculty, and student architects Joel Alcorn, Stephanie Manieri and Ashley Brown accepted the award at a ceremony in Brisbane.
"The students are ecstatic and the project was well-received by industry and academic peers," Ms McDonald said.
"It's another feather in QUT's cap."
The jury praised the project as a "wonderful symbol of community renewal" and a "superb program for QUT students to experience the making of a building".
"But it is also more than that. It is a marvellous jewel of architecture both compositionally and architecturally," the jury said in a statement.
Winners move onto the National Architecture Awards being held in Perth on November 1.
The new campsite, which includes an agricultural shed for horses and campsite facilities for visitors, was officially opened in January.
