What is the purpose of this research?

The purpose of this research is to investigate the development of trust when interacting with an artificial intelligence (AI) system. To do this, we will measure brain activity and collect trust questionnaires during interactions with the AI system.

Are you looking for people like me?

The research team is inviting adults aged 18-35 years old, with normal or corrected-to-normal vision (wearing glasses or contact lenses is ok), who are right-handed, without any current musculoskeletal injury in hands or arms, without any injuries or disease of the central nervous system (e.g., traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, Huntington’s disease, motor neuron disease, neuropathies, stroke), not taking any neurotropic medication (e.g., for epilepsy, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia), and without any metal implants in the head.

What will you ask me to do?

Your participation will involve one visit of approximately 2.5 hours to QUT Kelvin Grove Q-block. During your visit, we will set you up with a head cap that has EEG electrodes embedded in it (which records electrical brain activity).

We will ask you to complete two tasks:

  1. to view images of human faces while seated at a table, judge whether these images are real or fake, and compare your ratings with the ones from an AI system
  2. to perform finger movements wearing a control-glove connected to a robotic hand driven by an AI system, and again make assessments of the AI system.

Are there any risks for me in taking part?

The research team believes the risks of this research are low. It may feel uncomfortable to wear the head cap with the EEG electrodes. We will minimise the time it takes to complete the experiments as much as possible. If you do agree to participate you can withdraw from participation in the research project without comment or penalty.

Are there any benefits for me in taking part?

It is expected that this research project will not benefit you directly. However, your participation will help to better understand cognitive activity of humans while interacting with AI systems. Findings of this study will help to develop improved AI systems in the future.

Will I be compensated for my time?

To recognise your contribution should you choose to participate, you will be given a $25 gift card as compensation for any out-of-pocket expenses from participating.

I am interested - what should I do next?
