QUT film and television graduate Patrick Clair has won an Emmy for creating the moody opening title sequence for the American HBO series True Detective.

The atmospheric titles mix layered images of stars Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey, torn landscapes and religious imagery.

Brisbane-based motion design and animation company Breeder worked with Clair on the sequence.

Clair, who graduated from QUT in 2002, received his Creative Arts Emmys for Outstanding Main Title Design.

It is the first time the 31-year-old creative director has been nominated for an Emmy.

Clair's varied work has included the official trailer for hit TV series The Blacklist, creating visuals for Irish rock star Bono's presentation at the 2013 TED conference in California, a foreign policy briefing video for President Barack Obama (commissioned by Washington think-tank the Brookings Institution), and a powerful video infographic for the ABC's Hungry Beast program on the Stuxnet computer virus weapon.

Clair focused on live-action directing, including 16mm short films, during his arts degree at QUT, and then went on to do a graduate degree in visual effects and titles design from the Australian Film, Television and Radio School.

After finishing his studies, he worked at MTV and with Australia's ABC, and freelanced for several years before starting Antibody - a Sydney-based design and production studio that specialises in trailers, titles and storytelling.
