$6.7 million in funding has been secured by Queensland University of Technology (QUT) research teams in the latest round of Australian Research Council (ARC) grants.

It was announced today (November 1) that QUT was awarded 17 Discovery Project Grants valued at $4.734 million.

  • Professor Lyn English received $468,000 for a Discovery Project which will look at ways of improving statistical literacy in primary school students. Statistical literacy provides a strong foundation for secondary mathematics study and productive participation in society.

The university also received six Linkage Project Grants valued at $1.733 million.

  • Dr Karen Manley's team was awarded $198,000 to look at the beliefs of builders which underpin their reticence to adopt more innovative methods. Partner organisations include Building Codes Queensland and Building Commission, WA.
  • Professor Edward Chung's team has secured $360,000 to partner with a number of transport and road authorities in a project which will look at innovative traffic analysis and control systems aimed at reducing traffic congestion.

In addition, QUT received one Linkage Infrastructure, Equipment and Facilities grant valued at $270,000, which will support Associate Professor Cheng Yan's nanotechnology research.

The research projects are all scheduled to begin in 2012.
