Queensland University of Technology (QUT) congratulates Queensland's 2012 Rhodes Scholar Amanda Rojek, who has an honours undergraduate degree in applied science from QUT.

QUT Vice-Chancellor Professor Peter Coaldrake said the recent news that Amanda Rojek had become the latest Queenslander to receive the world's most sought-after scholarship, was a tremendous achievement.

"We congratulate Amanda who completed her undergraduate studies with distinction at QUT in 2007, before undertaking her current medical studies at the University of Queensland," Professor Coaldrake said.

"This is the second year running a QUT graduate has been invited into the select Rhodes Scholar club, to undertake further studies at the prestigious University of Oxford.

"Last year engineering graduate James Tilbury (who is currently at Oxford studying for a Masters in Environmental Change and Management with an emphasis on poverty alleviation and sustainable development) was named the 2011 Queensland Rhodes Scholar.

"Amanda will now be the fifth QUT graduate to receive this distinguished award."

Ms Rojek, who was announced as a Rhodes Scholar on November 2, plans to study for a Masters in Global Health Science at Oxford, with a focus on the response and disaster management.

Ms Rojek said Queensland was prone to disasters and after pursuing her education overseas she would eventually like to bring that knowledge home.

She said she was proud of her association with QUT which had continued since completing her undergraduate degree in human movement studies in 2004.

Ms Rojek then completed a Bachelor of Applied Science at QUT and finished her Honours degree in 2007 with a perfect grade point average of seven.

"My mentors at QUT, Dr Ian Stewart and Dr Charles Worringham, instilled in me a belief that I had the ability to do something really meaningful with my career and were the driving force behind my application," she said.

Ms Rojek, who is currently employed at QUT's School of Human Movement Studies, and is studying medicine at the University of Queensland, will spend next year at Cairns Base Hospital as a medical intern before taking up her Rhodes Scholarship at Oxford.
