Professor Axel Bruns, an Australian Laureate Fellow and leading researcher from QUT’s School of Communication and Digital Media Research Centre has been elected a Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities.

Announced this week, Professor Bruns was among 40 new Fellows elected to the Australian Academy of the Humanities. The honour reinforces his international reputation in the field of user participation in social media spaces, and its implications for our understanding of the contemporary public sphere, drawing especially on innovative new approaches for analysing 'big social data'.

A chief investigator in the ARC Centre of Excellence for Automated Decision-Making and Society, Professor Bruns has published several books and is at the forefront in developing groundbreaking new research approaches in media and communication studies using novel computational methods.

Executive Director of the Australian Academy of the Humanities Inga Davies said Professor Bruns’s election as a Fellow was a significant achievement and testament to the outstanding contribution he has made to his discipline, and the exceptionally high regard in which he is held by his peers in the humanities community, both in Australia and abroad.

The Australian Academy of the Humanities was established in 1969 to advance knowledge of, and the pursuit of excellence in the humanities. The Fellowship of the Academy comprises more than 700 distinguished individuals elected in recognition of the excellence and impact of their scholarship in various humanities fields including archaeology, the arts, Asian and European studies, classical studies, Indigenous studies, literature, cultural and communication studies, languages and linguistics, philosophy, musicology, history, and religion.

Professor Bruns will be invited to add his signature to the Academy’s Charter Book at a Ceremony in November 2024.
