QUT has been recognised in a new international ranking as the top university in Australia, and 16th in the world, in communication and media studies.

In the latest QS Rankings, QUT has jumped 15 places up the rankings for communication and media studies.

It is now four places ahead of the University of Sydney which is the only other Australian university to make the top 20 for the subject area.

The QS subject ranking is the most exhaustive list of its kind, ranking university courses by 48 different subjects.

QUT also came at 35th place in the world in nursing and 41st place in art and design.

Professor Mandy Thomas, Executive Dean of Creative Industries Faculty, said the strong result for QUT cemented the School of Communication’s leading position and global reputation.

“It's evidence that our focus on strategic recruitments, curriculum renewal and research excellence pays off,” Professor Thomas said.

“It is wonderful to see that the hard work by our staff in the school is recognised by peers and employers in Australia and around the world.

“This year we are launching a new Bachelor of Communication program with study areas such as Journalism, Digital Media, Media and Entertainment Industries and Professional Communication.

“We are also bringing research and teaching together in our postgraduate programs in Digital Communication that will prepare our graduates for the communication job market of the future.

“The school is the base for the Digital Media Research Centre, which is recognised for its world leading research in Digital Media and the impact of digital technologies on society.

The school has a long history of high-quality research in this field and during 2018, our research capacity was strengthened further with strategic recruitments such as Capacity Building Professor Amanda Lotz and Associate Professor Daniel Angus.”

QUT is currently 19th on the QS rankings of the world’s best university less than 50 years old and 244th in the world in the QS World University Rankings 2019.
