Excellence in teaching computational mathematics, crisis management and law has seen three QUT lecturers honoured in Australia’s highest university teaching awards.
Associate Professors Timothy Moroney and Amisha Mehta joined law lecturer James Duffy in receiving their citations for outstanding contributions to student learning at the Australian Awards for University Teaching (AAUT).
The awards celebrate national excellence in teaching and learning innovations that result in a more engaging experience for students.
Associate Professor Timothy Moroney, (pictured above) from the Science and Engineering Faculty, is a computational mathematician.
He was awarded for providing students with a multidisciplinary experience in computation and simulation science, “incorporating authentic assessment and a collaborative approach to problem solving”.
He particularly enjoys helping students from across all areas of the faculty realise the potential of computation and simulation in their own fields of interest.
Associate Professor Amisha Mehta, (pictured below) from QUT Business School, was recognised for creating crisis simulations that leverage uncertainty and help business leaders and students make and communicate decisions to inspire trust.
As a risk and crisis communications specialist, she translates industry research findings about decision-making capability gaps into learning and teaching opportunities.
Senior lecturer James Duffy (pictured below) is recognised for his interdisciplinary teaching and scholarship in the fields of law and psychology.
He was awarded for enhancing his students’ learning of introductory material through the use of engaging technology and his care for students’ welfare as future law professionals.
Each are among 61 individual and teams nationally to be awarded AAUT Citations.
Professor Suzi Derbyshire, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Learning and Teaching) congratulated the trio.
“QUT’s success at the highly sought after Australian Awards for University Teaching scheme recognises the exemplary work being done by university educators who operate at the nexus of teaching, research and practice to help our students thrive in the real world,” Professor Derbyshire said.
Since AAUT's inception, QUT has a growing list of teaching awards for staff with more than 110 awards across the Citations, Teaching Excellence and Program categories.
