7th April 2016

QUT is proud to be announced as host of the next Times Higher Education (THE) Young Universities Summit to be held in Brisbane from 5-7 April 2017, the first time the event will be held in the Southern Hemisphere.

QUT Vice-Chancellor Professor Peter Coaldrake said it was a great honour for QUT to be chosen to host the international summit, which will also launch the 2017 THE 150 under 50 Rankings.

The announcement was made during the 2016 summit held this week in Barcelona, where QUT was also named as one of the world’s top young unis with a ranking of 28 in the THE 150 Under 50 rankings.

“This ranking acknowledges our global outlook and 'real world' focus, as one of the nation’s fastest growing research universities,” Professor Coaldrake said.

“As a young and ambitious university, we seek to equip our students and graduates with the skills they will need in an increasingly disrupted and challenged world.”

Professor Coaldrake said the THE Young Universities Summit provides a premier forum for younger institutions.

“Young universities occupy an increasingly significant and leading role for society, and their success warrants the serious international attention that this annual event provides.

“In partnership with Times Higher Education we are developing a memorable program of influential speakers from leading universities, multinational corporations and international governments for all attending institutions and visitors.”

Professor Coaldrake said the summit program would focus on the ways younger universities have risen in prominence and begun to challenge the traditional order of higher education.

He said themes of diversity in leadership, new models of collaboration, integrating STEM and creativity, and `real world’ futures would be explored.
