Now in its sixth year, the Law Alumni QUT chapter is looking forward to its next phase of growth and examining how it can continue to enhance the link between alumni and the QUT Faculty of Law.
With over 10,000 contactable alumni who have studied Law, Justice or undertaken their practical legal training with QUT, the chapter plays a pivotal role in connecting the alumni community for events, networking and educational purposes.
The current COVID-19 situation has provided scope for the chapter to reconsider its plans for 2020, with a focus now on communicating through the dedicated Law Alumni QUT LinkedIn group and planning is underway for an on-campus event later in the year should restrictions be eased.
Another initiative is the Alumni Spotlight series which highlights the diverse and talented alumni of the Faculty as they share their insights and experiences.
Recent profiles featured one of Queensland’s youngest appointed barristers, Denika Whitehouse and Michael Rice, international corporate lawyer turned social justice advocate.
Additionally, the chapter is seeking new members who are keen get involved and will be hosting an Annual General Meeting this year at a time still to be announced.
Current President, Emmelene Gray, Special Counsel at Moray & Agnew said, “I joined the chapter to meet like-minded colleagues, facilitate events that aim to reconnect and enhance engagement with alumni and ultimately, to 'give back' and continue my long association with the university”.
Emmelene has fond memories of her time at QUT.
“I really enjoyed my time at QUT and learning from 'real world' professionals. Particularly there was opportunity to become involved in the 'life' of the university and extra-curricular activities such as mooting and student societies,” she said.
Anna Hawke, a Junior Lawyer at Munro Thompson Lawyers and chapter executive member, shared her reasons for joining.
“I thought it would be a great opportunity to catch up with former classmates who I had spent so much time studying with over the years. I also love any excuse to get involved in social events and make new connections,” she said.
