Jaime Forson on DJ Deck

As a freelance photographer and web designer, I had the privilege of living and working abroad for many years. It was during my time overseas, particularly in the UK and Japan, that I discovered my passion for digital design and creating meaningful user experiences as it opened my eyes to this whole area of technology and communication. I realised that I really wanted to deepen my knowledge in the tech industry and pivot from my current career, which led me back to university.

Following her passions

Enrolling in university was not a new experience for me. I had initially enrolled in a fine arts degree straight out of school, but it wasn't the right time for me then. However, this time around, I had a lot more motivation and drive. I moved back to Australia and enrolled at QUT as a mature-aged student. I had already been in the workforce, working various freelance jobs over the years, and had somewhat of an idea of what direction I wanted to head in. This allowed me to focus more on my studies as I was really excited about the steps I was taking.

One important lesson that I learned was that it's never too late to change your career path. If you're not enjoying what you're doing, change it up. Skills and interests, as well as industries evolve throughout your lifetime, and it's important to be open to trying new things, or completely change direction if that’s what you feel is right.

Studying at QUT has been a fantastic experience. The academic staff have been incredibly supportive, and the community that surrounds the university has equipped me in a much more holistic way than when I first enrolled in university. I participate in student clubs and attend networking events, which has allowed me to build connections (and friendships), gain valuable insights and also helped me to land a paid internship at a major tech company which I will be starting soon.

Finding balance

Balancing university life as a mature-aged student can be challenging. You have bills to pay and often need to work while studying. However, finding the right balance is key. I'm lucky enough to have a flexible job, which allows me to work the hours that suit me. It's all about making sacrifices and managing your time effectively.

My experience returning to university has been a life-changing decision for me. It has allowed me to deepen my knowledge, future-proof my career, and gain relevant skills that will enable me to create meaningful and intuitive experiences.
