The QUT Dragon Boat Regatta has been an annual event since 2012, and will be held at the Cultural Forecourt, South Bank on Saturday 10 August 2019 from 9am – 3pm.
This family friendly event brings together approximately 400 paddlers from a variety of QUT Faculties and Divisions, with staff, students and external participants. The public nature of the event and prime location draws in public spectators to cheer on teams down the river.
The 2019 QUT Dragon Boat Regatta will include live and free entertainment, stall acitivations and a variety of food trucks to enjoy, plus free facepainting, free circus activities and kids crafts.
This event is part of Queensland Multicultural Month and celebrates the cultural origins of dragon boating. Dragon boating is one of the oldest sports in the world, originating in China over 2,000 years ago. A dragon boat is a long canoe (approximately 12m long) that holds 20 paddlers seated in pairs, a drummer at the front to keep time and a sweep who stands at the back and steers. For competition the boat is rigged with a dragon head and tail.
So make sure you get involved in this unique sport and enjoy a day on the Brisbane River!
