To celebrate Library and Information Week, we asked QUT alumnus, State Librarian and CEO of the State Library of Queensland, Vicki McDonald about her career, the State Library's vision and, most importantly, what she is reading now!
What attracted you to a career in Library and Information Services?
It was accidental. I saw an advertisement in the local newspaper for a library assistant. I was a frequent library user and thought “this sounds like a good opportunity”. I have since completed several tertiary qualifications, and also been very active in the professional associations. I have worked in libraries, my entire working life – and enjoyed a very rewarding career!
What is one thing you wish more people knew about libraries?
The breadth of what is offered. Libraries have something for everyone – no matter your age or interest.
What single trend or development has had the most impact on libraries in recent years?
Like every other aspect of society, it would have to be COVID-19. I clearly recall April 2020 when it was evident that State Library needed to increase it digital service delivery. Although we had already embraced digital delivery, our response to COVID-19 meant that we significantly accelerated our work and redirected resourcing. Since March 2020, there has been a 30% increasing in online sessions, and the trend continues.
What is your vision for the State Library?
Our organisational vision is Inspiring possibilities through knowledge, stories and creativity. It was developed by staff through a series of workshops in 2017. What I really like about it is that all colleagues can relate their work to its achievement, and our clients also can imagine how they can benefit. It encompasses the breadth of our offer; from toddlers in the First 5 Forever baby rhyme time, to a veteran sharing their experiences by recording an oral history of their participation in the Afghanistan peace-keeping activities, to a First Nations elder recording their language for future generations.
If we achieve our vision, all Queenslanders – current and future – will enjoy exceptional services that will have lifetime benefit.
What is one skill you couldn’t live without?
Juggling!
Bonus Question: What are you reading now?
Next book on my shelf to read is Sister girl by Jackie Huggins.
