Why choose this course?

This course is designed in consultation with clinical staff from industry, taught by registered radiographers with extensive experience, and incorporates hands-on experiences from your first year. Our simulation facilities feature virtual and hands-on equipment to offer you a learning experience that is only available at QUT.

You will build confidence and gain experience in fundamental skills using specialist equipment on campus including digital radiography systems, general X-ray, mobile X-ray, mammography and dental. You will also access the anatomy laboratory and pathology specimen museum, and will develop competency in computer systems and software used in the industry.

Placements in hospitals include shifts in areas such as theatre, emergency and intensive care. These varying environments allow you to experience a range of different cases and work with patients from a variety of cultural backgrounds.

Real-world learning

You will start supervised clinical experience during first year, with significant time in the third and fourth years. Placements are offered across public and private hospitals, and a range of imaging facilities throughout Queensland and some interstate sites. These varying environments will allow you to experience patients with different case histories and diverse cultural backgrounds.

What to expect

The Bachelor of Medical Imaging (Honours) can lead to a career as a radiographer (also known as a medical imaging technologist) where you will use techniques such as X-ray, computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), to produce high-quality images which are then used by medical specialists to diagnose, manage and treat an injury or disease.

The honours component of the course will offer you a competitive advantage in the workplace. You will be a critical thinker with a strong foundation in research, and have advanced skills to become a leader in a profession where responsibilities and capabilities are expanding. You will study a series of topics in preparation for a research project which is part of your final year studies, along with advanced imaging and professional practice placements.

Work Integration Learning

During this course you are required to complete 55 weeks (equivalent to 2200 hours) of professional work placements.

Careers and outcomes

As a graduate of this course you may be employed in a radiology department in a hospital, private radiology practice or health department. You may also work in medical equipment sales. The course also prepares you for postgraduate studies in medical imaging and related areas.

Professional recognition

The course is an approved program of study with the Medical Radiation Practice Board of Australia.

Student registration

QUT automatically registers students enrolled in this course with the Medical Radiation Practice Board of Australia in accordance with the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law Act 2009. Overseas qualifications

QUT will consider equivalent overseas qualifications for admissions purposes. If you have tertiary qualifications from countries where English is not the standard language of instruction, you must provide evidence of English language proficiency.

English language proficiency

We require students to demonstrate they can speak, write, read and comprehend academic English to a specified standard.

Our English proficiency requirements for this course are:

  • IELTS (Academic): 7.0 or better overall with no subscore below 6.5
  • PTE: 65 or better overall with no subscore below 58
  • TOEFL (IBT): 98 or better overall with a writing subscore of 24 or better, and other subscore below 20
  • Cambridge English Score: 185 or better overall with no subscore below 176

The test must have been completed within 2 years prior to the proposed course start month.

Advanced standing

If you have prior studies or work experience, you may be eligible for advanced standing (credit). You can apply for advanced standing once you've been accepted to QUT. If you're in your first semester of study, you must apply for advanced standing within 10 days of receiving your offer.

Blue card: You must undergo a criminal history check for working with children and be issued with a suitability card (blue card) before commencing clinical placement/practicum in an organisation where you may work with children or young people.

The processing of your application may take several months so you must submit your blue card application to HiQ as early as possible to ensure you have your card before you begin any unit that requires contact with children. There is no charge for student blue cards. Students who already have a blue card must register it with QUT.
