What you'll receive

We offer sport and Esports scholarships for athletes competing at varying levels of sport:

  • Aspiring Sports Scholarships (valued at $1,000) for aspiring athletes competing in netball, waterpolo and swimming
  • Sport Development Scholarships (valued $5,000 - $10,000) open to all sportspeople representing in sports verified by Sport Australia
  • Elite Sport Scholarships (valued $10,000 - $20,000) open to all sportspeople representing in sports verified by Sport Australia.

Sport Development and Elite Sport Scholarships include additional benefits like:

  • membership to the Elite Athlete Program
  • access to personal and professional development opportunities
  • access to nutrition and sports psychology services and more
  • membership of the QUT College of Excellence
  • access to QUT's Leadership, Development and Innovation Program.

If you're applying for a Sport Development or Elite Sport Scholarship and would like to access these benefits, you'll need to register with our Elite Athlete Program once you are an enrolled student at QUT.

Eligibility

Aspiring Sport Scholarships

To be considered for an Aspiring Sport Scholarship, you must:

  • meet academic and citizenship eligibility requirements
  • be a 2019 high school graduate who is starting at QUT in 2020
  • be competing in netball, swimming or waterpolo, and be willing to join the QUT netball, swimming or waterpolo club once enrolled.

Sport Development and Elite Sport Scholarships

To be considered for Sport Development or Elite Athlete Scholarships, you must:

  • meet academic and citizenship eligibility requirements
  • be a new or continuing QUT student
  • be an athlete who's currently progressing and achieving within a sport that is recognised by Sport Australia
  • be representing either an Australian State, National Sporting Organisation or Professional Player League sport
  • be able to demonstrate a minimum of (T4) athlete categorisation level within Sport Australia’s FTEM framework and have either:
    • competed in at least one event
    • been invited onto a development/talent ID team.

We have adopted Sport Australia's Athlete Categorisation Framework (FTEM Framework) to assess the level of development of athletes applying for our sport scholarships.

Your or your relevant sporting body must be able to show evidence or demonstrate that your level of development aligns with a Talent 4 (T4) or higher tier within the FTEM Framework.

Esports eligibility

In 2020 the QUT Sport Scholarship for esports will be available for aspiring League of Legends players.

As part of the scholarship selection process for esports players, applicants must participate in the QUT performance trial, which will be held in early February 2020. Trials will be held within the League of Legends game only.

More information, including trial dates, will be distributed in the last quarter of 2019.

How to apply

You'll need to to verify selection and/or results and achievement via a sporting CV. You must provide:

  • an overview of events competed at in reverse chronological order (e.g. 2019, 2018, 2017, etc) and placings
  • copies of your team selection letters (on official letterhead)
  • references from your state or national sporting organisation.

Aspiring athletes who have not represented at state or national level should provide two referenced from relevant persons who can verify their current level of performance.

What happens next?

We'll start making scholarship offers from 13 December 2019, with all scholars finalised and notified by 19 February 2020.

Due to the large volume of applications received, only students who are successful in being offered a scholarship will be notified. Appeals for unsuccessful applications will not be considered. All decisions are final and based on the original application submitted.

Esports Scholarship

Applicants will automatically be added to the mailing list and informed of trial dates once esports applications have been submitted.

Conditions

Aspiring Sport scholarships

You must:

  • join the student club for your respective sport (netball, swimming, waterpolo)
  • represent QUT at targeted events both on and off campus (if selected)
  • contribute to the ongoing development and maintenance of a positive culture within your sport.

You can't:

  • defer your scholarship offer. If you defer your course, you can reapply for the QUT Sport Talent & Sport Elite Scholarship the following year.
  • hold other certain scholarships types concurrently with this scholarship, unless it's an Equity Scholarship. If you have any questions about holding other scholarships, contact our Scholarships Coordinator.

Sport Development and Elite Sport scholarships

To keep your Sport Development or Elite Sport scholarship, you must:

  • maintain a course grade point average (GPA) of 4.5 or higher in each semester.
  • represent QUT at up to 2 targeted events or appearances each year, which may include:
    • speaking at QUT Sport events
    • contesting the National University Championships (if your sport is contested)
    • participating in other campus events.

You can:

  • take a leave of absence for up to 2 years, but only after you have completed one full-time semester of study. You won't receive scholarship payments during periods of leave.

You can't:

  • defer your scholarship offer. If you defer your course, you will need to reapply for the QUT Development and Elite Sport Scholarship the following year
  • hold other certain scholarship types concurrently with this scholarship, unless it's an Equity Scholarship. If you have any questions about holding other scholarships, contact our Scholarships Coordinator.

Esport scholarships

Selected applicants are required to represent QUT in the Oceanic Challenger Series (OCS) team in 2020, or within its underpinning Academy Team. Recipients must also comply with our player performance and behavioural standards as set by RIOT Games and QUT.

If successful, all applicants will be expected to engage in the QUT Sport community by attending events, representing QUT, or in a leadership capacity. Representative requirements will be negotiated between the applicant and QUT Sport.

About the scholarship

We are proud to support aspiring, developing and elite athletes across a wide range of sports by offering sport scholarships annually for both new and existing students.

Sport scholarships are broken up into a number of categories to support athletes at all levels of performance. This includes talented sports people who are still developing and progressing in their chosen sport all the way through to high-performance level athletes representing Australia at national and international levels.

Aspiring Sport Scholarships

In 2020 we will offer scholarships valued at $1,000 to new students who are aspiring high-school athletes developing and achieving in:

  • netball
  • swimming
  • water polo.

Sport Development and Elite Sport Scholarships

Sport Talent and Elite Sport Scholarships are available to both new and current QUT students who are representing in sports that are recognised by Sport Australia. We will offer up to 12 Sport Development Scholarships, and up to 7 Elite Sport Scholarships.
