Additional course costs

For some courses, you have to pay to:

  • purchase items, like uniforms or safety equipment
  • participate in course related activities.

These compulsory purchases are an additional cost; they're not covered by your tuition fees.

If you're studying in more than one faculty area (double degree), check both the relevant single degrees for additional costs.

International students

You might have to do work experience during your course. If you do, you need to be aware of the impacts on your work limit as outlined in the conditions of your student visa.

For more information, see the Department of Home Affairs’ conditions for working in Australia on a student visa.

Business

Our Executive Master of Business Administration (GS50) includes a two-week international study tour. Depending upon the choice of specialisation, the cost is either:

  • approximately $7,000 for the Global Leadership study tour
  • approximately $10,000 for the Complex Program Leadership study tour.

Costs include all in-country transportation, accommodation, company and site visits and most meals.

Creative Industries

For all Creative Industries courses (including relevant double degrees), you'll need to pay up to $500 for production costs (CDs, DVDs, artworks and assessment materials).

If you're a design student, you may need to pay for art materials and some drawing materials.

All courses that have dealings with construction sites must complete the General Safety Induction Course (Construction Industry) in order to obtain a construction white card. These courses include:

  • architecture
  • interior architecture
  • landscape architecture

Education

You may have to pay extra costs (for example travel and accommodation) if your course requires off-campus activities such as:

  • practical investigations
  • Work Integrated Learning (WIL)
  • embedded professional experience
  • professional experience placements.

Students undertaking professional experience will need to reduce working commitments during this period in order to maintain the required full-time attendance and related planning activities.

All education courses

Items you have to pay for Cost for 2019
International professional experience (optional) Approximately $5,000-$10,000 (flights, accommodation, living expenses etc.) depending on the overseas country chosen.
Rural and remote professional experience (optional) Approximately $1,000-$2,000, (travel accommodation, living expenses etc.) depending on the location in Queensland.
Brisbane-based professional experience Students should check local travel arrangements for costs (e.g. bus, train, car, ferries etc.)
Workwear for professional experience - students must wear smart casual clothing. Some sites may require more formal wear, e.g. tie, jacket in some independent schools Varies

Literacy and numeracy test for initial teacher education students

If you study an initial teacher education course (undergraduate and postgraduate) at QUT, i.e. Bachelor of Education, Graduate Diploma in Education or Master of Teaching course, you must pass a national Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students before you complete your course. The test will assess your personal literacy and numeracy skills.

QUT provides you with one reimbursement to cover the cost of the test but won't pay for any administration charges you incur if you don't sit your test. If you don't pass the test, you will have to pay for any additional times you take the test.

Working with children check: blue card

For Queensland and international professional experience placements, you need a blue card. This involves a criminal history check so that you can undertake professional experience in a school or site, or activities in any unit which may involve contact with children or young people (under the age of 18).

As a QUT student, you can apply for a blue card through QUT for free. Submit your blue card application to HiQ as soon as you've received your offer. To be eligible to start your placement, you must submit your blue card application, renewal or linking form to HiQ at least 10 weeks before the start of professional experience.

If you don't receive your blue card (or link your existing valid card to QUT) before the start of professional experience or a unit where you'll be working with children, you may not be able to participate and your grades may be affected. You may also be liable to pay fees for the unit.

For placements in other Australian states and territories, you must fulfill that state's or territory's requirements for working with children and provide the Professional Experience Office with a copy.

Health

Placement costs

Students in all Faculty of Health courses (including double degrees) who are required to undertake placements off-campus may have additional costs, such as:

  • hepatitis B vaccination
  • other vaccinations
  • first aid or CPR courses
  • uniforms (including footwear)
  • criminal history checks
  • health and fitness tests
  • equipment
  • travel (e.g. public transport, your vehicle expenses, parking)
  • accommodation (for rural and regional placements).

In your financial planning, it's important to consider that you may have to reduce or temporarily cease your work commitments during placements to maintain the required attendance.

You're required to maintain suitable dress standards in clinical and placement situations. You may need to budget for some items in addition to the uniform requirements for a course.

Hepatitis B vaccination

Hepatitis B vaccination is recommended for all Health students, but is required for many placements and is mandatory in Queensland Health facilities. The cost varies from $70 for a three-injection course, to $92 for a fast-tracked vaccination at the QUT Medical Centre, and up to $150 from other providers.

A standard three-injection course plus verification of immunity by blood test may take up to a year to complete, so planning for this vaccination should begin early.

Other vaccinations

Diphtheria, Measles, Mumps, Pertussis (Whooping Cough), Rubella, Tetanus and Varicella (Chicken Pox) vaccinations are mandatory for all students attending a Queensland Health facility for placement.

Hepatitis A, Influenza and Poliomyelitis are highly recommended for all health students.

These and other vaccinations are available from the QUT Medical Centre.

First aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)

The QUT Guild offers first aid ($115), refresher ($90) and CPR ($60) courses. The cost of a full first aid course may be up to $150 from other providers.

First aid qualifications are current for three years, but CPR must be renewed annually.

Tuberculosis screening

Nutrition and dietetics students are required to undertake a tuberculosis screening test. Testing and the immunisation (BCG) are available from the Clinical TB Service at Princess Alexandra Hospital. This is a free service for health care workers and student health care workers.

Blue cards

Students must undergo a criminal history check for working with children and be issued with a suitability card (blue card) before commencing clinical placement/practicum in an organisation where they may work with children or young people.

The processing of your application may take several months so you must submit your blue card application to HiQ as early as possible to ensure you have your card before you begin any unit that requires contact with children. There is no charge for student blue cards. Students who already have a blue card must register it with QUT.

Criminal history check

Students in the Bachelor of Paramedic Science and the Bachelor of Nursing (and associated double degrees) are required to complete a criminal history check. Students undertaking a placement in a nursing home or aged care facility will also need to undergo this check. Criminal history checks may be requested through your nearest police station.

Medical assessment

Paramedic science students are required to undergo a medical assessment to ensure that they are able to perform the role of a paramedic. A medical assessment must be done at one of the medical practices approved by the Queensland Ambulance ($150).
