QUT is committed to reducing environmental impacts by recycling, reusing and reducing waste to landfill. Before you throw it in, check the signage on all of our bins.

You can help to increase recycling and eliminate waste to landfill by learning what goes in which bin and encouraging others to put their waste in the right bin too.

We continue to work with industry partners to find alternative markets for the materials that are recycled to ensure the best outcome.

Recycling your items

We recycle a range of items including coffee cups, organic waste and containers. Check below for your item and how you can recycle it.

Coffee cups

Place your lid in the yellow recycling bin and your empty cup in one of our green collection tubes.

Did you know, in 2022 QUT saved 2,368 cups from landfill by choosing Green Caffeen reusable cups? That's 95 kg of carbon offset!

Mixed recycling (glass, plastics, cans)

Place any glass, plastics and cans that do not have the 10 cent symbol in the mixed recycling bin with the yellow lid.

Containers for Change

Place any containers that have the ten cent symbol in the Containers for Change bins.

Paper and cardboard

Place any paper and small cardboard packaging in the marked blue wheelie bins or the mixed recycling bin with the yellow lid.

Organic waste

We've partnered with Mallow Sustainability, a local composting company to collect food waste from our retail food outlets and staff kitchens.

Place organic waste like food scraps, coffee grinds and paper towel in our organic waste buckets and bins.

Other materials

There are recycling stations located at KG R Level 2 and GP V Level 2 which collect other materials to be recycled including:

  • batteries
  • small e-waste
  • mobile phones
  • CDs/disks
  • household cables
  • toners/cartridges.
