Dr Courtney Coombs

Dr Courtney Coombs a Sessional Academic in Visual Arts, Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane. They completed a practice based PhD in Visual Art in 2015 at the same institution. Courtney is also a professional artist and founding Co-Director of No Frills* and LEVEL artist run initiatives. Their research outputs, both practiced-based and written, have been important contributions to the increasing discussions on gender and sexuality in Contemporary Art. Courtney has exhibited extensively, nationally and internationally, and has presented at conferences in major cities around the country. They dedicated to continuing to challenge and contribute to various discussions about inequity in art, extending her current research in gender politics in art to include a broader assessment of the heteronormative structures that perpetuate gender and sexuality inequities in art and society more broadly. Courtney is committed to broadening her approach to focus on community-based activities, while continuing her passion for teaching and learning. Driven by the conviction that queer feminist approaches to making and research benefit the art world, academia and broader society, Courtney’s creative practice, teaching and research employ various strategies such as subjective voice, reflexive practice, collaboration, and alternative methods for critique.
