Biography
Dr Bridget Weir is a criminology lecturer and researcher at the Queensland University of Technology. She graduated from QUT in 2015 with a Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Justice and was awarded her doctorate from the School of Justice in 2020. She was a recipient of the Faculty of Business and Law Executive Dean’s Commendation for Higher Degree Research for her doctoral thesis titled ‘Child sexual abuse and the Australian Roman Catholic Church: Using techniques of neutralisation to examine institutional responses to clergy-perpetrated child sexual abuse’.Bridget’s research focuses on sexual offending, including institutional offending, sexual offender reintegration, restorative justice, and redress. Bridget has also published on subjects such as suicide in Queensland, suicide prevention, and determinations of death.
Bridget is currently Chief Investigator on the project ‘Circles of Support and Accountability (CoSA) and other child sexual abuse-related post-custodial community reintegration programs’ funded by the National Office for Child Safety (Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet) as part of implementing recommendations stemming from the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse.
Bridget has taught a range of subjects which broach the intersection of criminology, policing, law, and psychology. Bridget is currently Unit Coordinator for JSB170 Introduction to Criminology and Policing and JSB207 Punishment and Penal Policy. Bridget is available to discuss research and postgraduate supervision of topics relevant to sexual and institutional offending.
