About the workshops

Our hands-on workshops build enthusiasm for STEM, expose students to STEM industries and careers, and create links between Indigenous Australians, our past, our future and STEM.

To maximise engagement and get the most out of the QUT First Nations STEM Program we recommend registering for all workshops.

The QUT First Nations STEM Workshops are run by the Oodgeroo Unit, QUT's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student Success Unit.  If you want to learn more about the Oodgeroo Unit's high school engagement, admissions pathways, scholarships and support, contact us via email information.oodgeroo@qut.edu.au or via phone 1800 645 513. Workshops

Deadly Mini Drones

Drones aren't just for delivering food or taking an Instagram photo. They are being used in various industries from agriculture to the arts and health services. In this workshop, students will explore the world of drones and how enterprises are utilising them, while building their own mini drones using popsicle sticks.

Sphero NRL

What is coding? Without it we'd have none of the most popular technology we've come to rely on today. During this workshop, students will code a programmable robot/Sphero to perform an action. Then they'll put their skills to the test, navigating and avoiding competitors in the Sphero NRL challenge.

Lighting Technologies

Aboriginal cultures worked scientifically in the development of at least four distinct fire lighting technologies. Students will explore the method and science behind each technology. Then we use materials to make smoke.

Woomera Physics

Woomeras are spear-throwing devices used by various mobs to hunt and during warfare. During this workshop, students will be introduced to the diversity of First Nations technologies, simple machinery elements, and basic physics. Then they'll put their skills to the test with tennis balls and makeshift woomeras to see how can refine their technique to hit the target from the furthest distance at the fastest speed.

Express your interest

The QUT First Nations STEM Workshops program is designed by mob for mob.
