7th November 2013

'Poor boy' menswear inspired by Oliver Twist and old England made from military blankets and tents, sweet and floaty dresses with Amish overtones, and a strangely ungaudy wearable tribute to Dame Edna are part of After Darkly, the end-of-year show from QUT fashion graduates, the highlight of QUT Fashion Week.

Twenty-three graduates from QUT's fashion school will burst forth into the world with their final-year collections on show at After Darkly's three nights of parades, performance and glamour from November 20 to 22 up at the Kelvin Grove campus.

Open to the public, After Darkly is, as always, professionally produced, and unveils the work that the next fledgling generation of young designers will enter their careers with.

This year, the designers' collections will be on display in the Parade Ground of the Creative Industries precinct at Kelvin Grove that will have been transformed by QUT art and design students for live musical performance, video art, a pop-up bar and, of course, the FASHION.

The student fashion collections are sophisticated and playful," says QUT fashion design lecturer Carla van Lunn.

"The graduates have worked tremendously hard to produce some of the best fashion happening in Australia."

The After Darkly shows are a highlight of QUT Fashion Week which starts on November 18 with a Postgraduate Show of garments from such designers as Bianca Bulley and Shea Cameron.

The eighth edition of Frock Paper Scissors compiled by QUT's talented fashion, journalism, creative industries, business and interactive visual design students will be launched on November 21.

"Dedicated to exploring Brisbane's burgeoning creative scene Frock provides intelligent, inside knowledge of up-and-coming trends here and overseas," Ms van Lunn said.
"For the first time there will be the Frockpaperscissors app as well as the collectable print, and online publication."

Another facet of QUT Fashion Week features Romance was Born label's Anna Plunkett and Luke Sales in a live-stream panel discussion, called Fashion Chats, on 'What is fashion's dialogue with its own past?'.
