A new criminal justice research centre at QUT will target the issues that "highlight the lack of justice for many marginalised groups", the new Crime and Justice Research Centre director Professor Belinda Carpenter said.

The Centre will be officially opened today, Monday, December 10 with guests including Hal Wootten AC QC and Emeritus Professor David Brown from the University of New South Wales.

Professor Carpenter said research at the Centre focussed on independent research into controversial areas including carbon trading fraud, LGBTI youth and policing, romance scams, violence in mining communities and sex trafficking legislation.

"These are areas, which can lead to criticism of government policies or industry initiatives, are crucial to justice for the wider society," Professor Carpenter said.

"Such research would not occur without university centres like the Crime and Justice Research Centre providing the space for researchers to put their ideas and findings forward without fear."

The launch of the new Centre, to be located in QUT's School of Justice, coincides with the launch of Volume One of the International Journal for Crime and Justice.
