Check out Sportsgirl stores now and you will find a range of whimsical designs by QUT fashion graduate Ana Diaz inspired by 70s B-grade horror movies.

Launched this month Ana's Sportsgirls like Diaz collection, entitled 'Misteria' takes the flavour of the fashions from the 'Giallo' genre of Italian films.

"Giallo movies are about excess and over-the-top death scenes. The plots aren't the focus - instead, it's about the humorous gore and beautiful victims," says Ana .

"The shapes in Misteria are 70s sportswear with a Hollywood glamour edge. I've kept the pieces true to my label which is classic but quirky."

Ana's final-year QUT collection of winter pieces won her a place in the National Graduate Showcase at the Melbourne Fashion Festival last year where she was the only graduate designer to represent Queensland.

It was here she was "discovered" by Sportsgirl and invited to design for the well-known chain.

"To design for Sportsgirl is a massive opportunity and gives me credibility in the industry which helps launch my own label, Diaz," she said.

"I was one of two designers out of 12 who were chosen to participate in the Sportsgirl's like collaboration at the head office in Melbourne as part of the mentoring process. I learnt a lot about how a big company works, and how supportive Sportsgirl are of emerging talent."

Ana graduated with a dual degree from QUT in Fashion and Business which she says has paid off.

"This is the right career for me. It's amazing really. I enjoy my work and feel lucky I am able to do it," she said.

"Having a business degree is helping me focus on growing my own label and taking advantage of all the great opportunities I have had so far."
