Outstanding business leader Rosemary Vilgan was awarded QUT’s highest honorary award, the title of Doctor of the University, on Sunday, 6 December for her distinguished service to the University and the community.

Rosemary Vilgan was awarded the Telstra Australian Business Woman of the Year in 2013.  That award recognised her outstanding contribution to Queensland's business community and her innovation and drive in her role as CEO of Queensland's oldest and largest superannuation fund.  She also received the Telstra Community and Government Award.

Rosemary Vilgan began her career in 1990 as a technical specialist helping to establish QSuper, a universal superannuation scheme for Queensland public sector employees.  She became its CEO in 1998.  Ms Vilgan recognised the inequities in superannuation contributions, particularly for women, and negotiated an equalisation of the rate for all state government employees.  She retired from her QSuper role two months ago.

She is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and a life member of the Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia Limited.

Rosemary Vilgan is herself a distinguished QUT graduate, and has played a major role in the governance of the institution over the last decade.  She has been a member of the QUT Council for over a decade and has served as Chair of the Audit & Risk Management Committee for most of that time.

Rosemary was Deputy Chancellor for two years, has also been a member of the Chancellor’s Committee, and is currently also a member of the Investments and Borrowings Committee. She is also a very strong supporter of QUT’s Learning Potential Fund, which assists students from disadvantaged backgrounds with scholarships and bursaries to pursue their studies here.
