Why choose this course?
The study of health science with a major in nutrition focuses on issues that affect the whole population and examines innovative ways to promote healthy lifestyle choices and prevent diet-related disease. Nutritionists are employed in a number of industries. During this course you will complete placements in a variety of settings, giving you an understanding of how nutrition can be applied in diverse environments. To prepare for your preferred career, you will also complete a selection of units that align with your career goals.
Course summary
The science of nutrition examines the scientific principles of biochemistry and physiology and how these affect food and nutrition, diet, and chronic disease. This knowledge is then applied to communities for analysis of food supply, government policy, and eating behaviours.
Students in this course are encouraged to complete elective units that provide a wide choice of career options. You may choose to complete study in clinical science, exercise science, health promotion, public health, and research. In your final year you will complete placements which help transform your learning into understanding and provide opportunities for industry networking.
Career outcomes
Graduates often work as professionals in government, educational institutions, the food industry, health agencies, corporate environments and community groups. They may also specialise in health promotion, public health, Indigenous health, marketing or journalism.
This course can also lead to further study or research in nutrition and dietetics, health service management, environmental health, and public health.
Professional recognition
Graduates are eligible to apply for membership of the Public Health Association of Australia and the Nutrition Society, and associate membership of the Dietitians Association of Australia.
